About

The world's first electronic-digital computer was built by a Gator Engineer. The rest, as they say, is history.

Our connection to information technology dates back to the very beginning of digital computers. John V. Atanasoff graduated in 1925 from the University of Florida with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He went on to earn his doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of Wisconsin. During 1939-42, while serving on the faculty of Iowa State University, Atanasoff and his graduate student Clifford Berry built the world's first digital computer. The world will never be the same. Justifiably, we take great pride in the pioneering work of our own Dr. Atanasoff.

Since the days of Atanasoff, our faculty and students have continued to invent new devices and develop new ways of thinking about technology. They're working in interdisciplinary teams to:

  • investigate bioinformatics and aging
  • explore the use of computer science in arts and entertainment
  • develop core areas such as security, networks, high-performance computing, distributed systems, databases, graphics and more.

At the University of Florida, we firmly believe the best of computer engineering is still ahead of us. We have a rich history inseparably connected to computers themselves, and we look forward to an even more promising future.
